Lots of ways to create illusion of depth. Here a tree trunk on the left extending off the top of picture defines the foreground as opposed to the back ground. In oil paintings things get smaller in the distance and the colors become more drab and tame than colors in foreground and things have far less detail than things in foreground. Shadows show depth too.
You’ll get it, it involves the vanishing point in the perspective. I think the piece looks great, Charlie always adds a soulful contemplation.
